Buy Digital Video Cameras on eBay But Avoid The Risks
By Trevor | July 23, 2007
If you are in the market for a new digital video camera then purchasing on eBay is an option.
However as in any purchase where the goods are unseen it is best to carefully consider the transaction before committing to buy camcorders or anything else.
The great proportion of sellers on eBay are honest and to help keep it this way eBay have provided buyers with a few options to determine whether or not they are dealing with an honest seller.
There are two main indicators of an honest seller using eBay. Firstly, and possibly the most important, is their feedback rating. This is information regarding the transaction from people who have been to buy digital video cameras from the seller in the past.
Buyers and sellers can leave an impression of their business relationship. A digital video camera seller with a feedback rating of at least 98 percent is generally considered a good risk.
It is important to drill down into a camcorder seller’s feedback to see what complaints have been made to date.
Read the feedback, sometimes you will find that buyers leave negative feedback just to receive a refund on a perfectly good item. However, if the feedback consistently says the item was not as advertised, the seller is probably best avoided when looking to buy digital video cameras.
Another problem area to look at is postage charges, sometimes buyers will sell an item below market cost and then make up the difference in postage and handling charges. In actual fact eBay is working to eliminate this practice, but it is still going on.
The better sellers will list the handling charges, which include the price for any packages and their trip to the post office this will allow you to calculate the postage depending on your location.
Others list a flat fee for shipping and handling although check the insurance for items such as digital video cameras. At least with these buyers you know upfront what the total cost will be enabling you to make a better decision of how good the deal is.
However, the main disadvantage when you buy digital video cameras on eBay is that you cannot get a feel for how the camera sits in your hands – one main advantage of visiting a shop that I find hard to give up!
