Digital Video Basics

Digital video provides a quality leap over the old analogue technology.
Digital video achieves this better quality by storing images and sound as numbers instead of waves.
An alternative explanation would be that the term digital simply refers to the use of binary numbers to evaluate input, store the input, and then transfer the output to a defined mode of receiver, such as a television set, computer screen, or even printer.
The term “digital video” started to become popular in 1996 when an exciting new video format was introduced to the world.
Similar to the existing analogue video technology, digital video captures moving pictures onto magnetic tape.
Digital video and digital transmissions for that matter make great use of the principle of video compression. Compression allows for faster storage and also greater detailed images. The industry standard is provided by the Moving Picture Expert Group (MPEG) and typically you will see the term MPEG compression used in its various stages such as MPEG 3.
It is hard to imagine life without digital technology now, after all it has enabled the following:
Video CDs
DVDs
Online playing of larger video files, and even entire movies
Camcorders
Cameras
Mobile picture and video phones
The iPod Video
There are so many digital video applications available to consumers nowadays the technology is becoming smaller, easier to use, and also more competitively priced.
It is not surprising that so many people are joining the ranks of digital video creation through traditional camcorders, still cameras with digital video built in and mobile phones that also have digital video capabilities built in
In addition to the above, digital technology has also added more opportunities for those who wish to work from home and become their own bosses.
You will find that many of these video camera junkies are now much sought after wedding photographers. Having your wedding recorded on video is not only very fashionable but also a great way of remembering the great occasion in much more detail than was previously available.
Photographers who can put together high quality wedding videos are making a lucrative living of what once used to be a hobby.
As digital video technology continues to advance, more and more amateurs will join the ranks of the professionals who are using the technology to make easier profits.
