What Kinds of Online Degree Technology have Emerged in the Last Few Years?

By norman | October 24, 2009

The world wide web in its infancy was simply a collection of static pages, information transmission via email and message boards, and very little else. It seems like every year now people are coming up with new technologies that make it easier and simply to communicate online. This has lead to the development of online degree technology that has made it possible for universities to offer degrees completely over the internet, something that would have been impossible with yesterday’s technology.

Resource Material – In a traditional classroom setting, the primary resource material is the textbook, and for many online classes you will still be required to buy these. However, there are a number of other resources which are integrated into the best online programs thanks to the newer online degree technology which makes for better programs online. This includes audio and video content, images, interactive web content, and more.

Blackboard – Blackboard is a web based software application that most professors and universities use as their primary online degree technology. This is the interface through which a professor will post assignments, course outlines, and important dates, and is the primary interface through which students and faculty will interact when learning through an online environment.

Synchronous Learning – In the first days of universities offering full credit classes online, it was felt that the biggest deficiency of most online learning was the inability to replicate the classroom environment that many disciplines find so important. Things like debate and discussion were impossible in the old online format of learning.

Learning in a Synchronous environment eliminates this problem. This is the equivalent of a virtual classroom. Students will be able to interact with a real professor and be given presentations via slides, or text images, while being able to interact with other students and have real debate and discussion. Some classes will require that these be attended, although they won’t be scheduled with the frequency of regular classes at a university, but help to replace that missing element with some new online degree technology.

Why this is important: Technology has been the separating factor that not only has made online education the equivalent of traditional study methods, but in many ways, the superior, because it allows people to study from any location, and at any time, making education overall much more accessible to most people, in turn providing them with increased job and earning opportunities.
